Emmy, Fool of Fen
A downloadable game for Windows
Short and silly game about some swampy scallywags.
(Every character in this game is a self-insert.)
A full playthrough should take approx. 20-30 minutes.
Made in rare (but legal!) CGA palette, for DOSember Game Jam.
---
Instructions (Important):
For best results, use one of the prepackaged DOSBox launchers. You just need to double click to play!
If using another DOS emulator, or your own install, please adjust your memsize to 63 or the game will crash.
If using real hardware, clench and pray accordingly.
F5 = Save, F7 = Load, F9 = Restart.
The game has sound! The sound is important, but not technically integral. It starts after you meet the second character.

I really enjoyed this! Emmy was definitely a much more endearing jester than Malcolm / Kyrandia. It also inexplicably reminded me of the strange edutainment safari games from the early 90s. I’d love to see more!
And THANK YOU for hosting the jam!
I felt it was unfair, inviting people to make DOS games without attempting it myself! I really wanted to encourage other people with no gamedev experience. But in turn, excellent submissions from people like yourself have now inspired me to become less amateur! Thanks a bunch for taking the time, in every respect!
Magnanimous! The only game I've played in the last ten years that flawlessly encapsulates the escapism and dualistic positivity of the 90s. Bon soir les enfante, bon soir
Ma plus profonde gratitude, Papa Pénis Pal.
Loved it! Some really fun writing and everything had a certain janky charm to it. This game is a good example of why I have been playing little hobbyist AGS games for the past 20 years. A quick peek into someone's creative mind that almost always reveals something unique and fascinating.
As a non-native CGA (and English) speaker, I would've appreciated slightly slower text speed, because some of the color combinations made the text a bit difficult to read at times and few dialogues flew past too fast for me to fully comprehend them.
Thank you so much, I'm so glad you found things to enjoy about it!
You're entirely right about the text! I'm basically entirely new to gamedev, and despite wanting to make something intentionally amateur and imperfect, I do apologise for the lack of accessibility.
I tried SO MANY THINGS to make the text more legible, but my current skill combined with this palette made it darn tricky! I'm already working on a more refined game in the engine, and will definitely take the text speed feedback on board.
I really appreciate your kind-yet-constructive feedback, especially from an AGS pro!
Yep, you probably did boldly go with one of the more challenging palettes that has no black to lean on, but I'm glad you did, because I've never played an adventure game with this specific color scheme before and it was interesting to see how it can be used.
Also, being called an AGS pro gave me a good chuckle, because I still consider myself more of an enthusiastic hobbyist :)
Great little game!
And I am now more familiar with Fens as a side benefit.
It's been a month, time for your unscheduled fen-test!
Thanks for playing it, and for leaving a lovely comment!

I'm removing your Special Thanks credit...
Sure, my name is Dan.
Awesome game! I managed to become some sort of a Straw Demon:
#1 objective of the game. Thank you so much for giving it a play!
positively delightful. excellent art, inspired creature designs, very silly dialogue, there's nothing not to like.
Precisely the opposite of what I'd intended!
Thank you, Jordan, for your endless efforts to be a kind and thoughtful human.
